Mel and Mary Ann Leonard of River Hills celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a party at their home Nov. 25, 2011.

The couple, residents of River Hills for 26 years and Brown Deer for 25 years, married Nov. 24, 1951, at St. Paul University Chapel in Madison. They renewed their vows Nov. 24, 2011, at Our Lady of Good Hope in Milwaukee.

Children of the couple are Michael Leonard of Lincoln, Neb., Kathleen "Kate" Leonard and Joseph Mastromonica of Gurley, Ala., Paul and Lynne Leonard of Jackson, Mark and Lynn Leonard of Glendale, and Matthew and Kara Leonard of Sterling, Va. The two have 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mel founded Leonard Insurance Services in Glendale and Mequon in 1963. He was the president and an insurance agent from 1963 until 1992, when he retired.

Mary Ann was vice president of the firm and an insurance agent from 1963 until 1998, when she retired.

Mary Ann oberved that "people often asked, 'How did we stay married so long?' For many years we had this agreement: Whoever leaves first has to take the children!"
